Court of Appeal rejects Abba Kyari’s bail request
Abuja, Nigeria – The Court of Appeal has rejected the bail request of Abba Kyari, a former deputy commissioner of police, who is currently facing charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and international money laundering.
Kyari had applied for bail on health grounds, but the Court of Appeal upheld the ruling of the lower court, which had earlier denied his request.
According to the prosecution, Kyari received bribes from Ramon Abbas, also known as Hushpuppi, a Nigerian Instagram celebrity who was recently extradited to the United States to face charges of fraud and money laundering.
Kyari, who was once one of Nigeria’s top police officers and headed the country’s anti-kidnapping squad, has denied the allegations against him. He was suspended from the police force in July 2021 following the allegations.
The Court of Appeal Abuja Division has dismissed an appeal by the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, where he sought the reversal of an earlier ruling of a Federal High Court in Abuja refusing his request for bail.
The case has attracted widespread attention in Nigeria, with many Nigerians expressing disappointment at the alleged involvement of a senior police officer in fraudulent activities.
Kyari is expected to remain in custody pending his trial, which is scheduled to begin on March 1st.
