INEC to conduct elections in Anambra despite concerns
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it will go ahead with plans to conduct elections in Anambra state, despite concerns about insecurity in the region. The elections, which will take place on November 6, 2021, will be for the position of governor in the state.
Anambra state has been a hotbed of insecurity in recent months, with cases of kidnapping, banditry, and other forms of violent crime on the rise. There have been concerns that this could impact the ability of INEC to conduct free and fair elections in the state.
However, speaking at a press conference in Abuja, the Chairman of INEC, Mahmood Yakubu, said that the commission was working closely with security agencies to ensure that the elections are conducted in a safe and secure environment. He noted that the commission had conducted successful elections in other parts of the country with similar security challenges, and expressed confidence that the same could be achieved in Anambra.
Yakubu also noted that the commission was taking measures to ensure that COVID-19 protocols were observed during the election, including the provision of personal protective equipment for election officials and voters.
The announcement by INEC has been welcomed by many in Anambra state, who have expressed a desire to exercise their democratic rights and elect a new governor. The current governor, Willie Obiano, is not eligible to run for re-election due to term limits.
However, there are still concerns about the security situation in the state, and many are calling on the government and security agencies to take more decisive action to address the issue. With the elections just a few months away, it remains to be seen whether the security situation in Anambra will improve enough to allow for a peaceful and successful election.
