Nigerians stage protest in Abuja over election results

ABUJA, NIGERIA – Thousands of Nigerians took to the streets of Abuja on Sunday to protest against the results of the country’s 25th February 2023 presidential election.

The protesters, who marched through the streets of the capital city, carried placards and banners with inscriptions such as “No to rigged elections,” “Our votes must count,” and “Say no to electoral fraud.”

According to eyewitnesses, the protesters were peaceful and orderly, and the police did not intervene. However, security was tight, and armored vehicles were stationed at strategic locations in the city.

Another protester, Favour, said, “We are tired of the government’s lies and empty promises. We voted for change, but what we got was more of the same. We will not rest until our voices are heard, and our demands are met.”

Meanwhile, the electoral commission has yet to respond to the allegations of electoral fraud. The ruling party, however, has dismissed the protests as the work of “sore losers” and called for calm.

The protest comes amid growing concerns over the state of Nigeria’s democracy, with many observers noting that the country’s electoral system is flawed and susceptible to manipulation.

The international community has called for calm and urged the government to address the concerns of the protesters. The United Nations, the African Union, and other regional bodies have also expressed their readiness to support Nigeria’s democratic process.

The protest ended peacefully, with protesters dispersing after several hours of marching through the city. However, many Nigerians say they will continue to speak out until their demands are met.
