The University of Queensland is a public research university found in Brisbane, the capital city of the Australian state of Queensland. It was established in 1909 by the Queensland parliament.

The university is one of the six sandstone universities, an informal designation of the oldest university in each state. The University of Queensland was rated second nationally by the Australian Research Council in their latest research assessment and equal second in Australia based on the average of four major global university league tables.

Recent notable research of the university includes pioneering the invention of the HPV vaccine that prevents cervical cancer, creating a COVID-19 vaccine that was in human trials, and the development of high-performance superconducting MRI magnets for portable scanning of human limbs.

The University of Queensland counts two Nobel laureates (Peter C. Doherty and John Harsanyi), over a hundred Olympians winning numerous gold medals, and 117 Rhodes Scholars among its alumni and former staff. The university’s alumni also include the University of California, San Francisco Chancellor Sam Hawgood, the first female Governor-General of Australia Dame Quentin Bryce, former President of King’s College London Ed Byrne, and member of the United Kingdom’s Prime Minister Council for Science and Technology Max Lu, Oscar and Emmy awards winner Geoffrey Rush, triple Grammy Award winner Tim Munro, former CEO and Chairman of Dow Chemical Andrew N. Liveris, and present director of multiple organizations including IBM.

Requirements for Science International scholarships

You are qualified if you are:

  • an international student
  • studying full-time
  • beginning your first semester at the University of Queensland
  • commencing a UQ Faculty of Science program (minimum one-year duration). See the terms and conditions below for a full list of qualified programs.

And you:

  • have met the conditions of your offer by the scholarship’s closing date (you don’t need to accept your full offer by the scholarship application deadline)
  • display strong academic performance in your previous studies.

Interview date, Process, and Venue for Science International Scholarships

We will consider:

  • your academic performance (based on the academic credentials you submitted in your UQ Faculty of Science program application).
  • your capacity to create change and contribute to science (based on the personal statement you submitted in your Science International Scholarships application).
